Benedictine University (Nutrition Department)
Benedictine University offers nutrition programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels that are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of The American Dietetic Association (120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, Illinois 60606-6995, 312/899-0040). The undergraduate Nutrition major program, known as the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD), leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition. Students completing this degree program are eligible to apply for acceptance into Dietetic Internship programs.
The undergraduate Nutrition major offers the student the possiblility of obtaining the Bachelor of Science degree in four years of full-time study plus a Master degree in about one additional year. The undergraduate nutrition program is affiliated with the Benedictine University master degree programs: Master of Science in Nutrition and Wellness (M.S.N.W.), Master of Public Health (M.P.H.), and Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology (M.C.E.P.).
The Master of Science in Nutrition and Wellness program prepares students to become vital ingredients in community-based nutrition and wellness programs. This program is unique in that it is a life science-based health promotion program. The program provides the opportunity for students to select a concentration in Nutrition (Sports Nutrition or Dietetic Internship) or from the complementary fields of Health Education or Exercise Physiology. This is the only program in the country to offer a combined Master of Science in Nutrition and Wellness dietetic internship program. A dual degree option combining the M.S.N.W with the M.P.H. is also available.
The Benedictine University Dietetic Internship program can be combined with either the Master of Science in Nutrition and Wellness degree program or the Master of Public Health degree program at Benedictine University. Successful completion of this program qualifies one to sit for the registration examination to become a licensed and registered dietitian.
