Diablo Valley College
For over 30 years, DVC has been successfully preparing students for professional culinary careers. Accredited by the American Culinary Federation since 1990, Diablo Valley College's culinary arts program offers an in-depth, hands-on learning curriculum where students gain both knowledge and experience through the hotel and restaurant management program’s technical facilities.
Culinary arts students work and learn in a fully equipped food production kitchen, a demonstration laboratory, a retail pastry shop and a 130-seat restaurant that is open to the public.
In addition to training at the DVC facilities, students gain experience working outside the college through a required internship program.
Why study Culinary Arts at DVC?
The American Culinary Federation Educational Institute, a national organization of professional chefs, accredits our culinary arts program. Whether a student is interested in pursuing a four-year degree, or directly entering a culinary career, we offer a program that is recognized for its excellence.
About The Program
Articulation agreements with many four-year colleges offering culinary degrees, including University of Nevada – Las Vegas and Johnson and Wales University, make transferring easy. Nearly every course taken at DVC is fully transferable. Our chefs and instructors work in partnership with the counseling center to help students with articulation agreements, transfer requirements and recommendations. Graduates enter the culinary field well prepared for entry-level employment, many progressing to the position of executive chef. Successful DVC alumni can be found working in fine establishments everywhere from the prestigious Ritz Carlton and Masa's in San Francisco, to Mandalay Bay and Bellagio in Las Vegas. In California the hospitality industry is growing 4.7% each year! Opportunities have never been better. According to the National Restaurant Association's 1998 survey, Compensation for Salaried Personnel in Restaurants, the median salary for an assistant chef was up to $31,000 or more and a chef earned up to $45,000 or more.
The certificate requires 51 total units. Generally, students take two years to complete all the courses required for the certificate.
