Opportunities are abundant for persons with degrees in Foods and Nutrition.

The Therapeutic Dietitian, in hospitals and clinics, applies principles of nutrition and physiology to the feeding of individuals and groups with special health problems. Therapeutic dietitians are employed in military hospitals, locally and federally funded government hospitals, private hospitals, and extended care facilities.

The Food Service Administrator plans and directs the activities of an institution which provides food services. Administrative dietitians are employed by colleges and universities, public schools, hospitals, restaurants, hotels, department stores and transportation lines. They may also be employed by food services in industry, for clubs and organizations and as caterers for private affairs.

The Community Nutritionist has a wide variety of employment opportunities. Jobs exists with local government health departments and with federal agencies in the United States and abroad. Other opportunities include employment by food and product companies, food service equipment and utility companies. There are also opportunities for nutritionists as food editors with magazines, newspapers, radio and television.

This degree also qualifies an individual to teach at various levels (depending on the degree) in public schools, colleges and universities and conduct research. Beginning salaries for the B.S. Degree may range from $20,000 - $45,000 depending on type of employment.

It is important that persons considering a career in foods and nutrition like people and be interested in their health and welfare. They must enjoy sharing knowledge of what to eat and why with others, and be able to counsel and advise.
