Kay Ewings Cooking School

In 1985, after several years of enjoying cooking as a hobby, I decided to pursue a career in the culinary world. I had just taken a full participation cooking class that I had found to be a great learning experience. I discovered that the hands-on method, not just demonstration, is the best way to learn cooking techniques.

I decided to give it a try. I sent out flyers and took out ads and started teaching classes in my home. Three years later, Carol Kasper from The Panhandler kitchen store, asked if I would start teaching classes in her store. I taught hundreds of avid everyday cooks a variety of recipes in the kitchen of The Panhandler over the next 15 years. In the fall of 2002, I moved my classes to The Royal Standard on Perkins Road near Highland Road.

In 1994, I published my first cookbook, KAY EWING'S COOKING SCHOOL COOKBOOK. It is a collection of menus and recipes from the first ten years of cooking classes. As a follow-up to my first book, KAY EWING'S COOKING SCHOOL COOKBOOK…A SECOND COURSE, was published in 1999. In 2005 my third book, KAY EWING'S COOKING SCHOOL COOKBOOK…A THIRD HELPING, was published.

Over the past several years, I have escorted several of my students on enjoyable Culinary Adventures around the country. Two trips to Walt Disney World included culinary programs at the Disney Institute. We have also traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico for classes at the Santa Fe School of Cooking and went on a Royal Caribbean Cruise aboard the Rhapsody of the Seas for a Culinary Adventure at Sea in March of 2002. In November 2002, we travelled to Charleston, South Carolina and attended the Johnson & Wales Cooking School. Culinary tours of neighborhoods have been the highlights of our recent trips to New York City, San Francisco and Chicago. Culinary Adventures such as these have been a rich addition to my experiences in cooking and travel.
