The New School of Cooking

The New School of Cooking opened in its Culver City location in June 2000. We have classes to
serve every kind of cook, from beginners to advanced. We feature part time professional
cooking and baking programs which give students the training they need to become
professional chefs without the cost or time commitment of a full time culinary academy. The
professional series are designed to fit within the schedule of working people and meet once a
week for four hours. Students in the professional programs will learn all the essentials of classic
culinary technique with a focus on seasonality and receive basic training in ethnic cuisines and
recipe development.

Our recreational cooking classes focus on proper technique and seasonal ingredients. We have Asian cooking classes, French and Italian cooking classes, summer cooking camp for kids and teens, and a huge variety of classes to teach how to cook virtually every food on earth. All classes are hands-on, so students truly learn through participation in our state of the art professional kitchen. We have daytime classes, weekend classes and evening cooking classes to suit every schedule, and most recreational classes run for three hours.

The Professional Program

We feature comprehensive, part-time professional chef’s training and pastry programs. The courses are designed to teach students the techniques and skills necessary for a successful culinary career.

Whether you want to work in the food service industry, are already in the industry and just want to hone your skills, or are a serious home chef, our program will fit your needs.

The New School of Cooking bases our curriculum on that of full-time culinary schools. We have modified and condensed that format to accommodate students who work or who are otherwise unable to attend school full time. Because our program is part-time, the cost significantly less than a full-time culinary institute.

Our classes meet once a week for ten, twenty and thirty week sessions. We have classes during the day, evenings and weekends to accommodate any schedule.

The Recreational Classes

We offer a variety of recreational classes, covering a vast array of cuisines and disciplines. Most recreational classes are hands-on, allowing our students to truly learn and understand technique. Classes cover such diverse topics as knife skills, tarts and pies, sauce making, cooking with fish, chicken, meat and vegetables as well as ethnic cooking from all over the glove. We also offer classes on food and wine pairing and much more. In addition to single classes, we also offer short series which allow more in-depth understanding of a range of topics. All classes emphasize fresh ingredients in season, so each season brings a new crop of classes.
