Trenholm State Technical College (Culinary Arts/Hospitality Management)




Trenholm State Technical College's Culinary Arts Program is Alabama's largest Culinary Arts Program. The program is nationally accredited by the American Culinary Federation. Students graduating from the program have the option of obtaining either a Certificate, an Associate Degree in Applied Technology in Culinary Arts, or an Associate Degree in Applied Technology in Hospitality Management.

Drawing students from fifteen countries and thirty states each with their own goals from career training, job advancement, career re-training, opening their own businesses, to personal satisfaction, the Culinary Arts/Hospitality Management Program is diverse and available to meet your needs. The choice is yours! Culinary Arts/Food Service is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States. The U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics report that 2.9 million NEW JOBS will be added to the food service industry before the year 2005. That is a 30 percent increase! Also, according to PROJECTION 2000 ALABAMA, jobs as bread and pastry workers (pastry chefs) will be among the fastest growing occupations over the next decade. The Culinary Arts/Hospitality Management Program prepares you for virtually unlimited career opportunities that include executive chef, culinary instructor, food and restaurant critic, food and beverage director, equipment chef, banquet manager/chef, a sous chef or food sales to name a few! The "Roth Young Wage and Salary Review" lists the low salary for any of these jobs to greatly exceed $30,000 yearly and the high salary average exceeds $40,000 yearly. Money Magazine states the chef's AVERAGE SALARY as $35,000 yearly and EXECUTIVE CHEFS' as over $200,000 yearly. This is an exciting time with unlimited career choices.

In addition to the Culinary Arts options, most recently an Associate Degree option in Hospitality Management has been added to the program. Hospitality Management option is specifically designed or those students who are seeking a career path of management, as opposed to food production (cooking). Successful completion of this program will provide graduates with specialized skills that command higher salaries and extremely good opportunities for advancement with salary projections that lead to six-figure incomes. Job demand for this occupation, both locally and nationally, is tremendous. The Occupational Outlook Handbook, Projection 2000, and the Occupational Quarterly, states that Hospitality Management will take its place as one of the hottest career tracks.
